Meet Hannah Gardener | Science, Legislation & Flame Retardants

“Look, Mommy!” Your four-year old rounds the corner carrying a lit votive candle that had been scenting the room from a seemingly safe spot. Surprised by your immediate yelp, she drops the candle on the couch.  Potential crisis now averted through quick thinking, you take the time to talk about fire with your child, and breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn’t worse.  It brings to mind headlines you have seen recently on flame-retardant chemicals.  The slow steady release of chemicals into the air, our homes and places where we sleep have been under heavy scrutiny for years,  because of the long-term damage they may cause. Now,  finally, they are coming to light in more mainstream media. As is often the case with products that contain multiple chemicals, from cleaners to pharmaceuticals, teasing out our understanding of the impacts on our health takes good scientists and sound science."

It's less about fire-fighting and more about fighting an industry.

Protective Legislation: How To Find & Support Efforts In Your State

Me: If I was to invest my limited time and actively support protective legislation that enforced transparency and restricted the worst-of-the-worst chemicals, wouldn't I want to focus on federal legislation? An across-the-country approach that applies to all?

Learning Moment: State legislation can be a powerful tool to directly protect local residents and to create momentum for other states, and ultimately federal change. Right now, federal progress is highly unlikely.  Instead, our big sister nonprofits are working to defend current long standing protection such as the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Air Act, and many others.

In fact, it's highly likely that you have policy unfolding right now your state. Here is what we need to know and what we can do:

Meet Cheryl: Heart Disease to Passionate Advocate

It started watching my Dad live with a severe genetic heart condition....

As a kid, I didn't understand it but I knew something was wrong when life started to change.  As a family we were fairly healthy - we ate wheat germ, liver, spoonfuls of molasses, and took Vitamin E gel capsules.  Processed food was never in our house, but if my dad snuck out and purchased a bag of Fritos or box of Captain Crunch it was gone within an hour.  It was not beneath me to hide a box of sugary cereal because I knew with five siblings it would quickly become everyone's snack for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

How To Engage Your Inner Activist: It's Time

What the heck is an activist anyway?

"If I say the word activist you might have the image of people hanging banners, or chaining themselves to trees or screaming at authority figures or living in tents. Those are all activism. Or they can be.  But a lot of activists have never done any of these things.

So, what is the definition of activism? I think that really it is noticing something that you think needs to be changed and using your influence to change it."

Elizabeth Saunders brings delightful humor to understanding today's activism (a word often followed by "oh, I am not that!) in out Talk Savvy to Me video.

    Welcome "Safer States"

By working in collaboration with powerhouse organizations our Savvy followers are intimately connected to unfolding science, impactful legislation, advocacy work and educational tools. Through this structure, Savvy is uniquely connected to communicate upcoming campaigns, calls-to-action and high urgency topics. It is this 'we-are-one' approach that creates lasting change.  We are honored to announce our fifth and final founding nonprofit partner: Safer States.

Safer States is a network of diverse environmental health coalitions and organizations in states around the country that share a bold and urgent vision. Safer States believes families, communities, and the environment should be protected from the devastating impacts of our society’s heavy use of chemicals. Safer States believes that new state and national chemical policies will contribute to the formation of a cleaner, greener economy.
